August 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

The 30th of July doesn’t just mean another month gone by, it also means another year since the sinking of the USS Indianapolis. 72 years ago the ship went down after taking two torpedo hits from the Japanese sub I-58 captained by Mochitsura Hashimoto. Of the 1196 men on board 300 went down with the ship and almost 900 hit the Pacific waters covered in fuel oil with little to no provisions. Exposure, dehydration, salt water poisoning and shark attacks over the next four and a half days took that number down to 317 survivors. Today, only 20 are still with us, nineteen sailors and one marine. Post 79 was represented well at the reunion, with Marine Corporal Andrew Mehringer presenting the wreath and escorting Marine Survivor Edgar Harrell. It was a wonderful weekend with family and friends all paying tribute and honor to our WWII hero’s. May they all rest in peace.

We also had the privilege of meeting Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly, Governor Eric Holcomb with First Lady Janet Holcomb, and having dinner with the American Legion National Commander Charles Schmidt from Oregon.

We had great attendance for the monthly pizza night and the steak and catfish night, don’t miss these nights, good food and friends at the Post.

There are a lot of thanks necessary for this past month, all the volunteers that make the pizza night and steak & catfish so successful.

The behind the scenes volunteers that usually end up on the end of a drain cleaner, or mop, emptying trash or under a sink, HUGE thank you!

We have so many members who go out of their way to help out, couldn’t do it without you.
The upcoming month is busy as well:

Sept 8 thru 10: Zionsville Fall Festival.

Not only is the Post is building a float for the parade, has a booth at the festival, and once again we will be posting the colors at Lions Park to start the events. Any volunteers to man the booth during the weekend, there is a signup sheet on the board.

Sept 11

Patriot Day is recognized by US law as the official day of remembrance for these tragic events, and has been observed every year since. Each year on this day, American flags are flown at half-staff to honor and commemorate those lives lost. The US President asks fellow Americans to observe a moment of silence at 8.46am (Eastern Daylight Time), the time of the first plane collision into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. While the events took place within the USA, the shock and grief experienced in response to the attacks was shared across the globe, and for this reason Patriot Day will be observed not only in America, but all over the world. Let us not forget.

Thank you.

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

First and foremost, we must pay honor and respect to the seven sailors that made the ultimate sacrifice aboard the USS Fitzgerald. May they rest in peace.

We also lost another USS Indianapolis Survivor this month, Fair winds and following seas to Don McCall, Hero, Survivor and friend.

Thank you all for another month of patronage and support. Without all of the volunteers and patrons of our Post it would be difficult to survive.

Thank you to all that helped with pizza night, steak and catfish night, garage sale, Post Everlasting and our Flag Retirement Ceremony. It seems it is always the same crowd that works these events so we can always use more help.

Happy 4th of July to all our members, veterans, family and friends. Want to wish everyone a very safe and joyous holiday.

Want to say congratulations to our new officers that were installed this month. I once again proudly serve as your Commander of Post 79. Here are the rest of your officers:

  • 2nd Vice Commander – Ed Hogan

I believe now, Young’s Panting and given both the interior and exterior a new color. Thank you Young’s Painting for all you have done for the good of the Legion. We cannot thank you enough!!

June 2017

From Commander:

Dear Members,

Writing my portion of the newsletter on Memorial Day afternoon causes me to concentrate my thoughts on “What is Memorial Day”

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

This day brings to mind several famous quotes through the years;

“The Patriots blood is the seed of freedoms tree.” Thomas Campbell

And from Joseph Rodman Drake;

“And they for who their country die,
Shall fill an honored grave,
For Glory lights the soldiers tomb,
And beauty weeps the brave.”

I would like to thank all members who participated in putting flags out at the many cemeteries and for the Memorial services today. Beautiful day to pay honor and respect to our fallen heroes.

A special thank you to Ed Engledow for the live Taps at each cemetery.

Thank you all for making #79 such a special American Legion Post.

Thank you.

Honor Our Flag – Flag Day June, 14, 2017

I AM YOUR FLAG

I was born on June 14, 1777.
I am more than just cloth shaped into a design.
I am the refuge of the world’s oppressed people.
I am the silent sentinel of freedom.
I am the emblem of the greatest sovereign nation on earth.
I am the inspiration for which American Patriots
gave their lives and their fortunes.

I have led your sons into battle from Valley Forge to the
steaming treacherous jungles of Vietnam.
I walk in silence with each of your honored dead, to their
final resting place beneath silent white crosses, row upon row.
I have flown through peace and war, strife and prosperity,
Amidst is all, I have been respected.

My red stripes – symbolize the blood spilled
in defense of this glorious nation.
My white stripes – signify the burning tears
shed by Americans who have lost their sons.
My blue field – is indicative of God’s Heaven under which I fly.
My stars – clustered together, unify fifty states as one,
For God and country.

Honor me, respect me, defend me with your lives and fortunes.
Never let my enemies tear me down from my lofty position
– Lest I never return.
Keep alight the fires of patriotism.
Strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy.
Worship Eternal God and keep His commandment.
And I shall remain the bulwark of peace and freedom
– For all mankind

SPRING CLEANUP AT THE LEGION
APRIL 1ST
9:00AM – ??

Bring your shovels, racks, gloves and your willingness to help us spruce up the grounds, parking lot and inside.

From Commander:

Dear Members,

Spring is officially here no matter what the weather does.
Now the mulching, fertilizing and mowing begins!
April 1st is our post cleanup day, inside and out, hope to see a lot of our members there. See the message board for details.

April also brings Post Officer nominations. Give serious thought to who you would like to operate and maintain our Post for the next year. Your nominee has to be in agreement of holding that position, and accept the nomination. You can give your nomination to a committee member, Bobby Parker, Tom Wothke or Stuart Konija.

Once again the flagpole monument has been backed into. We are going to be forced to install bollards at the corners to keep this from happening. These bollards are unsightly but will protect the monument. This monument represents the loved ones who have served from our community or family of our members. For no one to come forward and report they backed into the monument is very disrespectful.
If you have any other ideas please share them with an officer.

This will be a very busy month coming up so let’s all lend a hand and get our chores done!

Thank you.

Happy Spring!

Spring is the time of the year when nature starts to renew itself, the flowers start blooming and the trees budding. It can also be a time when we can renew our desire to be involved with the American Legion to help our Veterans and their families and our community. There are lots of ways we can get involved. Plan to attend the next meeting on Monday, April 10th at 7:00 p.m. to find out what you can do to help. What you think might be a minimal donation of money or time, can go a long way at the American Legion. We look forward to seeing you.

We will be doing the spring clean up on Saturday April 1st starting at 9:00. Trimming bushes, pulling weeds, mulching, etc. Hope you join us to help spruce things up.

Thank you to all who bowled in our league. A portion of the funds that are put into the bowling machine help to support our American Legion Post. Practice up this spring and summer so you will be ready for the next league to start in the fall.

The Auxiliary will be raffling a kids Easter basket. Be sure to get your ticket, they sell out quickly. Thank you for supporting the Auxiliary.

The Auxiliary is sending 3 girls to Girls State this year. 2 girls from Zionsville High School and 1 from Western Boone High School. We hope they have a great time and look forward to hearing about their experience.

From the ALR Director:

From the American Legion Riders

Hello Everyone,
First I want to thank everyone for your patience, understanding, and all the help I have received in the transition of my position of the ALR Director. You all have made it seem a lot easier.

Not much to report this month. As you all know the weather is still jumping from cold and wet, and warm to dry, and back again, so we have had no time to ride for our Veterans, or children in need in the area. We do plan on starting our riding season very soon.

We had a good Burger and Pork Chop night last month. We had familiar faces as well as new faces and we were able to sell out on all the burgers and pork chops. We had lots of good conversations with the new people and they really enjoyed their time at our Legion.

I personally want to thank everyone that showed up to help us. Especially the kitchen help, clean up help, grill masters, and all the behind the scenes helpers.

We are raffling a Cornwell Tools hard tip dart board, which is sitting on the front table, on display and it will be drawn for on Pizza Night at 8:00. Please buy a ticket and good luck to you.

From the ALR Director:

From the American Legion Riders

As we begin a new year, I want to thank all the ALR members for electing me as Director, as well as my fellow officers, to lead the American Legion Riders of Post #79 for the 2017 year. As we go through the transition of new leaderships, please bear with us as we learn our new duties.

We hope to have some good ideas for events and rides planned this year that will not only benefit, but also represent the post, as we try to support our veteran’s, and local special need children.

We have lost many of our rider members last year and in the past and we are trying to remedy that, so we can make a better representation and presence of the post during our missions.

If there are any suggestions or ideas you wish us to fulfill, write it on a napkin or piece of paper and give it to any ALR member, or myself, and we will discuss it at our next meeting.

As riders, we love to ride and have fun in all we do for the post and community, and just again want to say THANK YOU for your support!

American Legion Riders response (motto)

We, your American Legion Riders, ride for God and Country, the American Legion Family and Allied Veterans everywhere. Protect those that protect us. Amen

February 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

2017 is off to a good start. We have a few more volunteers, clean up and maintenance days planned, more activities and fund raisers in the works.

Our 52 week raffle is underway and spring is just around the corner.

A special thanks to Rick Baum for getting the wheels turning on the firewood project for the homeless. It turned out to be a great success, Roy and Steve King for the loading and delivery of the firewood and all the volunteers involved with the cutting and splitting. Thank you all, what a great Post effort.

I would like to welcome the new ALR officers for 2017, take a minute to say hi and thank them for what they do.

Please pay attention to the bulletin boards for upcoming events and activities, it is going to be a great year.

Thank you.

From the Auxiliary President:

Happy February, the shortest month of the year!

As we are 1 month into the new year, remember that each of us joined the American Legion Auxiliary to do what we can to help our veterans and their families. There are lots of volunteer opportunities and fund raisers throughout the year. Come to our meetings to find out what is going on and what is planned. Maybe you have an idea for a fund raiser, bring it to the meeting, you never know what it could turn into. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, Monday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m.

The Auxiliary will have a basket to raffle this month. Be sure to get your ticket(s), they sell out quickly.

Thank you to all who are bowling on our league. A portion of the funds that are put into the bowling machine help to support our American Legion Post. The bowling schedule is posted on the board so that you know what week we are in. The league will end the week of March 26th.

February Fun Facts

  • Groundhog Day, Thursday Feb 2nd
  • Valentine’s Day, Tuesday Feb 14th

  • February was added to the Roman calendar in 713 BC. The length of the month changed over time and, at one time, it had as few as 23 days. Veteran Hospice Care – Volunteer Opportunity

When a family member enters hospice it impacts the family in a life changing way. Some of you have experienced that or know someone who has.

When Veterans come to their end of life experience it is too often a lonely and unsettling journey for them. They need comfort. These defenders of freedom can use your caring heart and compassionate attention during their final days.

AseraCare’s Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Theresa Anderson recently called Post 79 to offer a volunteer opportunity to spend time with a Veteran and non-veteran patients too. Veteran patients prize and benefit from having a volunteer visit them.

The volunteer can make their own schedule that is suitable for them and the patient. Do you have an extra hour to go visit a patient a couple times a month? Volunteers can be a companion, play music, bring a hand-made craft, read a story or spend time listening to the patient to hear about their lives.

January 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

With 2016 drawing to a close I would like to thank all the members who have stepped up and volunteered their time to make Post 79 the success that it is today.

We have dealt with drama, conflict and we have dealt with team work, patriotism and brotherhood. It all averages out and makes us a strong Post.

During all this we never lose sight of our mission or the goals we strive to achieve.

We are here for our Veterans and their families. For our brothers and sisters in Blue, Post 79, ZPD and ZFD have worked together this year like never before, and I am proud of the bond we have forged. We cannot succeed without the support of the community and we are judged by our actions in and out of the Post. Thank you all for being a good representative of our Post.

2017 will bring the same challenges as well as some new and we need to be ready to handle these, I have no doubt our membership will meet these challenges with gusto and professionalism and do what is the best for our Legion.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone for a great 2016 and I look forward to 2017.
Happy New Year everyone and may God bless you all.

Thank you.
For God and Country

From the American Legion Riders

It is hard to believe the year is drawing to a close. What a great riding season we had this year and we are all thankful for it. For many, we are closing December and some still have their bikes ready for one more warm day.

We have been blessed this year with good attendance at our ALR dinners and are forever grateful to our one table of folks that keep us going month after month. We were blessed with a great turnout for our 10th annual Cruzin’ 4 a Cure and were able to help two very deserving families who are now a part of us and we hope to see return to us in the coming years. And we are blessed and thankful for our Post. This post is a family and like families we have our ups and downs but also like family, we come together in our hour of need. And for this I want to extend a big thank you to all post members that keep us going year in and year out.

As we move into the New Year my Hope and Prayer is that we as a Nation find it within our hearts to find a way to come together for the greater good. It is a time to put aside the petty differences and work together to create a peaceful nation. Do not judge one’s color of skin, the clothes they wear, the car they drive or the person they love. Just be thankful God has given you a life to fulfill on this earth and follow in his footsteps.

It has been an honor to serve as the Chapter Director for ALR Post 79 and as well it has been enjoyable to write this newsletter snipit every month. I hope you have enjoyed reading it.

Last and most importantly, please always remember and never forget, “When you lay your head to rest, do so knowing you did your best.” ~Mic Woodrum

December 2016

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

November was a month of Honor and Remembrance for all of America’s Veterans. Just because the month is over doesn’t mean everything is OK for our Veterans, there are homeless, sick and lonely Veterans all over America that still need our help and prayers. With the Christmas season upon us let’s give an extra prayer or gift or a donation to the Veterans Home or the Indianapolis Domiciliary.

During the month of November in 1943, thousands of American and allied forces were fighting their way ashore on the island of Tarawa, one of the bloodiest battles of the Pacific theater, so give thanks that we could spend our holidays the way we chose to, because of these Veterans.

December is loaded with activities at the Post.
Sunday the 4th is Santa with the kids,
Annual Chili Cook-Off and the Army/Navy Game is on the 10th
Post Christmas Party on Dec. 23rd
New Years Eve snack pitch in party on the 31st.

Lots more going on between these dates so check the message boards at the Post.

Wishing each and everyone of you a Merry Christmas
And a huge Thank You for all your support  through 2016!

Thank you.

From Post Service Officer:

Veteran Homelessness is Painful

Having a safe place to live remains at the top of my gratitude list each day.

Seeing a homeless veteran standing on a corner at an intersection causes sadness.  Do you ever have that feeling as you drive past a homeless person that you could do something more?  There, another weathered person with uncertainty etched in the his/her face stands holding a sign saying: “Anything Will Help.” Do you ask yourself; “What’s his/her story, why are they there, or I wonder what will happen to them?”  It has been said that 40% of the homeless go one or more days without eating.

Many reasons affect homelessness.  Some Veterans returned from active duty desperately recovering from their visible and invisible wounds suffered while deployed and no family to greet them nor home to lay their head; others are harshly displaced after a heart wrenching divorce; there are those who lost their job of twenty plus years and have no way to support themselves or their dependent family; some veterans are released from prison with no permanent place to go.

Homelessness impacts a person like a fierce storm.  Imagine the feelings of despair, fear, humiliation, hopelessness, cries for health and dental care, physical pain from being exposed to the ruthless abuse of thugs or the severity of inclement weather!  The struggle to survive has ambushed the American dream.  Let’s not forget their children too.

CHOOSE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT HOMELESSNESS – Write it on the calendar

  • Learn more about homelessness (search websites, visit shelters)
  • Volunteer to help at shelters
  • Collect and Donate items
  • Raise and donate funds
  • Request a Guest Speaker to present their mission

Peter Marshall once said; “Small things done are greater than great deeds planned.”  One of the most difficult things to give away is kindness because it usually finds its way back to you (copied).  Doing small things with great love makes a difference.  Make a difference today by Lifting the fallen – Mending the broken – Comforting the downtrodden.

Take a moment to thank God for waking up with a protective roof over your head, having something readily to eat, warm shower and clean clothes.  All which hundreds of Indiana veterans long for each day.  Homeless people are not sub-human; they are human beings just like you.

At your service,
Rick Baum

Final Note
A Soldier’s T’was the Night Before Christmas

T’was the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,
in a one bedroom house made of  plaster and stone.
I had come down the chimney with presents to give,
and to see just who in this home did live.
I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,
no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.
No stocking by the mantle, just boots filled with sand,
and on the wall pictures of far distant lands.
With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,
a sobering thought came to my mind.
For this house is different, so dark and so dreary,
the home of a soldier, now I could see clearly.
The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,
curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.
The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,
not how I pictured a United States soldier.
Was this the hero of whom I’d just read?
Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?
I realized the families that I saw that night,
owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight.
Soon round the world, the children would play,
and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.
They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,
because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.
I couldn’t help wonder how many lay alone,
on a cold Christmas eve in a land far from home.
The very thought brought a tear to my eye,
I dropped to my knees and started to cry.
The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,
“Santa don’t cry, this life is my choice.
I fight for freedom, I don’t ask for more,
my life is my God, my country, my corps.”
The soldier rolled over and soon drifted to sleep,
I couldn’t control it, I continued to weep.
I kept watch for hours, so silent and still,
and we both shivered from the cold evening’s chill.
I didn’t want to leave on that cold, dark night,
this guardian of honor so willing to fight.
Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure,
whispered, “Carry on Santa, it’s Christmas day, all is secure.”
One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,
“Merry Christmas my friend and to all a good night.”
