July 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

First and foremost, we must pay honor and respect to the seven sailors that made the ultimate sacrifice aboard the USS Fitzgerald. May they rest in peace.

We also lost another USS Indianapolis Survivor this month, Fair winds and following seas to Don McCall, Hero, Survivor and friend.

Thank you all for another month of patronage and support. Without all of the volunteers and patrons of our Post it would be difficult to survive.

Thank you to all that helped with pizza night, steak and catfish night, garage sale, Post Everlasting and our Flag Retirement Ceremony. It seems it is always the same crowd that works these events so we can always use more help.

Happy 4th of July to all our members, veterans, family and friends. Want to wish everyone a very safe and joyous holiday.

Want to say congratulations to our new officers that were installed this month. I once again proudly serve as your Commander of Post 79. Here are the rest of your officers:

  • 1st Vice Commander – Stuart Konija
  • 2nd Vice Commander – Ed Hogan
  • Adjutant – Bobby Parker
  • Service Officer & Chaplain – Rick Baum
  • Finance Officer – Tom Wothke
  • Historian – Bill Bell
  • Sargent-at-Arms – Andrew Mehringer

Congratulate them next time you see them at the Post. Let’s continue all our work and make the Post a great place to be.

As you may have noticed, the building has had a new paint job. What a difference a new coat of paint will do. We want to thank Gary Young and his crew for the superb job done on the exterior. I believe now, Young’s Panting and given both the interior and exterior a new color. Thank you Young’s Painting for all you have done for the good of the Legion. We cannot thank you enough!!

We are nearly halfway thru our 52 week raffle. Congratulations to all the past winners and good luck to everyone as we continue with the second half of the raffle. There will be many other raffles throughout the rest of the year by the Legion, Auxiliary, SAL and ALR. Stop by and ask about the latest ones.

Thank you.
For God and Country
Bart Colvin
Commander

From the Auxiliary President:

While you are enjoying our Independence Day, be safe, have fun and remember those men and women who have fought and continue to fight for our freedom to celebrate. Thank a Veteran.

Thank you to all who participated in the yard sale last month. Your support helps us to continue to help our Veterans. Thank you also to Beth Applegate and Vicki Gieselman for their hard work in promoting the yard sale.

Have some dimes weighing your pocket/purse down? Consider donating them to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund (AEF). There is a water bottle at the bar for the dimes. One water bottle will hold $100 in dimes. The AEF is a fund set up to help Auxiliary members who are experiencing financial difficulties. One dime can go along way to help a friend.

We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, Monday, July 10th at 7:00 p.m.

From Post Service Officer:

Resident Veteran Small Game Hunting & Fishing License at Reduced Cost

Any Indiana resident who is service-connected disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs may purchase a license to hunt and fish in the State of Indiana for a $2.75 annual fee, or $27.50 for ten years.

This license does NOT include turkey, deer or stamp privileges (Game Bird Habitat, Waterfowl Trout/Salmon).

In order to receive this benefit, the veteran must complete the Application for Reduced Fee Hunting and Fishing License for Disabled Veterans available from County Veteran Service Officers, from the Department of Natural Resource offices, or from the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. The form verifies that the veteran is service-connected disabled and authorizes the reduced fee and is verified by the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs. Ref: IC 14-8-2-228.3.

State Form 50833 can be accessed on the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs’ website. Once you apply, eligible veterans will receive a “certificate” from IDVA. Access further details and application through http://secure.in.gov/dva/2382.htm

From the Director
Of the American Legion Riders:

Hello from the ALR!

We are asking for prayers for one of our riders. Roger Neal is dealing with some health issues. He is doing better but, has a bit of recovery ahead.

One of our female members is going to go to a Learn to ride class at Westside Harley Davidson in Plainfield this month. After the training she hopes to be riding on her own. Good luck to her!

We have had good ideas and some brain storming, courtesy of our ride coordinator, of a possible Veteran Pro Am golf tournament next year. We will have more information as it arises.

We want to thank everyone for continuing to come out to our Hamburger and Pork Chop dinner. Please come and bring a friend.

Also, thanks to everyone who supported our dart board raffle. We did give it away after all the tickets were sold. Look for other great items to come up on our raffles.

God Bless our post, soldiers, veterans, and God Bless America

American Legion Riders response (motto)
