February 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

2017 is off to a good start. We have a few more volunteers, clean up and maintenance days planned, more activities and fund raisers in the works.

Our 52 week raffle is underway and spring is just around the corner.

A special thanks to Rick Baum for getting the wheels turning on the firewood project for the homeless. It turned out to be a great success, Roy and Steve King for the loading and delivery of the firewood and all the volunteers involved with the cutting and splitting. Thank you all, what a great Post effort.

I would like to welcome the new ALR officers for 2017, take a minute to say hi and thank them for what they do.

Please pay attention to the bulletin boards for upcoming events and activities, it is going to be a great year.

Thank you.
For God and Country
Bart Colvin
Commander

From Vice Commander:

Most of us would rather not think about dying. I’m right there with you. Here is the Military Retiree/Veteran’s “My Personal Affairs Planning Guide”. This guide was published by CW3 (R) Al Reed of the Redstone Military Retiree Council. The guide helps all of us Vets organize our affairs just in case something were to happen to us.

Please download a copy and take a minute to read it and fill it out. It will help those loved ones that you leave behind.

From the Auxiliary President:

Happy February, the shortest month of the year!

As we are 1 month into the new year, remember that each of us joined the American Legion Auxiliary to do what we can to help our veterans and their families. There are lots of volunteer opportunities and fund raisers throughout the year. Come to our meetings to find out what is going on and what is planned. Maybe you have an idea for a fund raiser, bring it to the meeting, you never know what it could turn into. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, Monday, February 13th at 7:00 p.m.

The Auxiliary will have a basket to raffle this month. Be sure to get your ticket(s), they sell out quickly.

Thank you to all who are bowling on our league. A portion of the funds that are put into the bowling machine help to support our American Legion Post. The bowling schedule is posted on the board so that you know what week we are in. The league will end the week of March 26th.

Veteran Hospice Care – Volunteer Opportunity

When a family member enters hospice it impacts the family in a life changing way. Some of you have experienced that or know someone who has.

When Veterans come to their end of life experience it is too often a lonely and unsettling journey for them. They need comfort. These defenders of freedom can use your caring heart and compassionate attention during their final days.

AseraCare’s Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, Theresa Anderson recently called Post 79 to offer a volunteer opportunity to spend time with a Veteran and non-veteran patients too. Veteran patients prize and benefit from having a volunteer visit them.

The volunteer can make their own schedule that is suitable for them and the patient. Do you have an extra hour to go visit a patient a couple times a month? Volunteers can be a companion, play music, bring a hand-made craft, read a story or spend time listening to the patient to hear about their lives.
