June 2017

From Commander:

Dear Members,

Writing my portion of the newsletter on Memorial Day afternoon causes me to concentrate my thoughts on “What is Memorial Day”

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season.

This day brings to mind several famous quotes through the years;

“The Patriots blood is the seed of freedoms tree.” Thomas Campbell

And from Joseph Rodman Drake;

“And they for who their country die,
Shall fill an honored grave,
For Glory lights the soldiers tomb,
And beauty weeps the brave.”

I would like to thank all members who participated in putting flags out at the many cemeteries and for the Memorial services today. Beautiful day to pay honor and respect to our fallen heroes.

A special thank you to Ed Engledow for the live Taps at each cemetery.

Thank you all for making #79 such a special American Legion Post.

Thank you.
For God and Country
Bart Colvin
Commander

Honor Our Flag – Flag Day June, 14, 2017

I AM YOUR FLAG

I was born on June 14, 1777.
I am more than just cloth shaped into a design.
I am the refuge of the world’s oppressed people.
I am the silent sentinel of freedom.
I am the emblem of the greatest sovereign nation on earth.
I am the inspiration for which American Patriots
gave their lives and their fortunes.

I have led your sons into battle from Valley Forge to the
steaming treacherous jungles of Vietnam.
I walk in silence with each of your honored dead, to their
final resting place beneath silent white crosses, row upon row.
I have flown through peace and war, strife and prosperity,
Amidst is all, I have been respected.

My red stripes – symbolize the blood spilled
in defense of this glorious nation.
My white stripes – signify the burning tears
shed by Americans who have lost their sons.
My blue field – is indicative of God’s Heaven under which I fly.
My stars – clustered together, unify fifty states as one,
For God and country.

Honor me, respect me, defend me with your lives and fortunes.
Never let my enemies tear me down from my lofty position
– Lest I never return.
Keep alight the fires of patriotism.
Strive earnestly for the spirit of democracy.
Worship Eternal God and keep His commandment.
And I shall remain the bulwark of peace and freedom
– For all mankind

At your service,
Rick Baum
