April 2019

From the Commander:

Spring is here, the daffodils and tulips are blooming and it won’t be long before we have to start mowing grass and planting gardens.

Busy season at the Post as well, we have Post cleanup day coming in April, district meeting in May and lots of events in between.

This past week brought a large fundraiser for an SAL member and our first Texas Hold’em tournament. The tournament will be held every other Sunday starting at 4 p.m. The kitchen will be open for everyone attending.

Do not forget our upcoming pizza night, the steak and catfish night and our broasted chicken night, these are all the first, second and third Fridays of the month. The prime rib dinners are held every other Sunday starting at 4 pm.

Don’t forget that the April 8th meeting is Nominations deadline. Please get your nominations to a board member for submission.

Thank you all for your continued patronage and your loyalty to Post 79.

Thank you.

Mission Statement:

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service-members and veterans.

From the Auxiliary President:

It’s finally Spring! While you’re planning your spring clean up, remember our Post will be having spring clean up day on Saturday, April 27th. If you have an hour to spare, any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is still time to sign up to run for an office with the Auxiliary so please let me know. Our election will be next month with installation in June. And if you aren’t interested in being an officer, remember there is always a need for volunteers to help with dinners, repairs, yard clean up, etc.

A new bottle for collecting dimes is placed at the bar. The dimes go to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund. Thank you to all who have contributed and continue to contribute to this helpful cause.

Look for our spring basket this month. Thank you to all the ladies who contribute items for the baskets and to Dianna for putting them together. Be sure to get your ticket(s), they sell out quickly.

There is a can in the bar area for collecting Box Tops for Education. Box tops can be found on all sorts of items i.e. case of water, Kleenex, Lysol cans, etc. Cut them off and, if you aren’t already collecting for your child’s/grandchild’s school, bring them to the legion for donating.

We are still collecting items for the Domiciliary. The box for those donations is in the banquet room. Please remember the items for the Domiciliary must be new.

Mission Statement:

In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.

From Post Service Officer:

VA AND MEDICAL MARIJUANA

Bipartisan Congressional legislation is being introduced to require VA scientists to begin gathering data on the medical benefits of marijuana for PTSD, and life challenging pain. Veterans experiencing chronic pain over long periods of time have experienced reduced availability for pain management medications because of the opioid crisis, and the growing number of deaths attributed to opioid overdose.

At least 30 states in the U.S. have approved the use of marijuana for medical and/or recreational use. Veterans should know that federal law classifies marijuana as a Schedule One Controlled Substance. This makes it illegal in the eyes of the federal government. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is required to follow all federal laws including those regarding marijuana. As long as the Food and Drug Administration classifies marijuana as Schedule I VA health care providers may not recommend it or assist Veterans to obtain it. Veteran participation in state marijuana programs does not affect eligibility for VA care and services. VA providers can and do discuss marijuana use with Veterans as part of comprehensive care planning, and adjust treatment plans as necessary. Some things Veteran need to know about marijuana and the VA:

  • Veterans will not be denied VA benefits because of marijuana use.
  • Veterans are encouraged to discuss marijuana use with their VA providers.
  • VA health care providers will record marijuana use in the Veteran’s VA medical record in order to have the information available in treatment planning. As with all clinical information, this is part of the confidential medical record and protected under patient privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations.
  • VA clinicians may not recommend medical marijuana.
  • VA clinicians may only prescribe medications that have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for medical use. At present most products containing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), or other cannabinoids are not approved for this purpose by the FDA.
  • VA clinicians may not complete paperwork/forms required for Veteran patients to participate in state-approved marijuana programs.
  • VA pharmacies may not fill prescriptions for medical marijuana.
  • VA will not pay for medical marijuana prescriptions from any source.
  • VA scientists may conduct research on marijuana benefits and risks, and potential for abuse, under regulatory approval.
  • The use or possession of marijuana is prohibited at all VA medical centers, locations and grounds. When you are on VA grounds it is federal law that is in force, not the laws of the state.
  • Veterans who are VA employees are subject to drug testing under the terms of employment.

February 2019

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

I hope everyone is staying warm and dry, crazy Indiana weather.
SAL pizza night was a huge success in January, as well as steak and catfish.
The broasted chicken dinner, and prime rib dinner was well attended, thank you all that volunteered, and DeeDee who works tirelessly day after day.

This month in history is interesting,

February 2, 1848 – The war between the U.S. and Mexico ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In exchange for $15 million, the U.S. acquired the areas encompassing parts or all of present day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas. The treaty was ratified on March 10, 1848.

February 3, 1943 – An extraordinary act of heroism occurred in the icy waters off Greenland after the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was hit by a German torpedo and began to sink rapidly. When it became apparent there were not enough life jackets, four U.S. Army chaplains on board removed theirs, handed them to frightened young soldiers, and chose to go down with the ship while praying.

February 10, 1942 – The first Medal of Honor during World War II was awarded to 2nd Lt. Alexander Nininger (posthumously) for heroism during the Battle of Bataan.

February 23, 1942 – During World War II, the first attack on the U.S. mainland occurred as a Japanese submarine shelled an oil refinery near Santa Barbara, California, causing minor damage

Birthday – American frontiersman “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846-1917) was born in Scott County, Indiana. He claimed to have killed over 4,000 buffalo within 17 months. He became world famous through his Wild West show which traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe for 30 years.

A very interesting month in history, check it out in it’s entirety at www.thehistoryplace.com.

Thank you all for your continuing patriotism and loyalty to Post 79.
Thank you.

From the American Legion Riders

Hello everyone.

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. The ALR did not meet in December because of Christmas. But, we did have a nice Burger and Pork Chop night. With help from Bobby and Robin Parker, Donna and myself had a wonderful time selling meat boards on Wednesday nights. Thank you all for coming out and playing.

On New Year’s Day, the Riders drove to Lafayette, to the Veterans home, to deliver cheer sacks to them again this year. We always get a thank you and smiles because they don’t get a lot of visitors. A big thank you goes to Will Greymore for, putting together such wonderful sack of goodies.

Also, the ALR went to the Boys and Girls club of Boone county, in Anson where we contributed a check of $600 to put towards any items, or help them with anything they needed. We took a group photo of us and the kids, which we will post on the video monitor soon.

This is my last Newsletter entry, due to the fact I will no longer be the ALR Director. We have new officers this coming year. Please continue to support them. They are good people. Also, I want to thank all of those who supported me while in my position as Director, and at the same time, I apologize to those I may have offended or hurt. I tried the best I knew how.

Thanks again to all!

American Legion Riders response (motto)

We, your American Legion Riders, ride for God and Country, the American Legion Family and Allied Veterans everywhere. Protect those that protect us. Amen

American Legion fights to honor valor over the Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross

The Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross was dedicated in 1925 to honor 49 men from Prince George County, Maryland, who fought and died for our country during World War I. The memorial was funded by local residents and The American Legion.

The property is currently owned by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

The Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross was recently listed on the National Register of Historic Places during a nomination meeting that occurred at the Prince George’s County Historic Preservation Committee meeting. However, there is a pending lawsuit to have the memorial removed. That lawsuit is going to be heard by the United States Supreme Court.

In 2014, The American Humanist Association (AHA) and three individuals filed a lawsuit requesting that the Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross be removed due to its religious nature as a Christian symbol while infringing on their First Amendment rights, on government property owned by the state of Maryland.

The Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross was listed as a Historic Place, but not on the National Register of Historic Places. There have been multiple applications for memorial to be considered for the National Register to no avail.

An application was submitted in January 2015 for the Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross to be nominated to the National Register with assistance from Peter Kurtz and Nancy Kurtz from the Maryland Historic Trust resulting in its acceptance.

However, while the Bladensburg WWI Memorial Peace Cross is now on the National Register of Historic Places, the lawsuit from the American Humanist Association to have it removed or destroyed continues.

See National American Legion article about the Bladensburg WWI Memorial.

November, the month of giving thanks.

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. The end of the war happened at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, so that’s why November 11 was chosen. Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day, a legal holiday in the U.S., honors all who have served in the nation’s armed forces, whether they are living or dead. Thank you to all who have served and to those who continue to serve.

Thank you to the ladies who have contributed items for our monthly basket raffles, to Dianna for putting the baskets together and to everyone who purchases raffle tickets. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Diane Shockley for painting the 2 benches. They look great!

Thank you to all who volunteer at our Post. From dinner nights, to clean up days, to simply taking out the trash. Your help means a lot and is greatly appreciated.

With winter approaching, the Domiciliary is in need of hats, gloves, scarves and individually wrapped snack items. Beth Applegate will be delivering on Tuesday, Nov 19th. If you wish to donate, please have your items at the Post no later than Monday, Nov
18th. The Domiciliary collection box is in the banquet room. Thank you Beth for delivering.

Mark you calendar for Sunday, Dec 2nd , the annual Kids’ Christmas party. Bring the kids for some Christmas fun, music and Santa. Open to everyone. Lunch at noon with Santa coming at 2:00 p.m.

Our next meeting will be Monday, Nov 12th at 7:00 pm. Hope to see you there.

God Bless our Troops past, present and future
Rita

Mission Statement:

In the spirit of Service, Not Self, the mission of the American Legion Auxiliary is to support The American Legion and to honor the sacrifice of those who serve by enhancing the lives of our veterans, military, and their families, both at home and abroad. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security.

From Post Service Officer:

Why We Honor Veterans Day

Each year, Veterans Day proudly stands as a nationally recognized remembrance on November 11th for those living oath takers who stood up to serve as America’s Guardians of Freedom at whatever the cost. Some are remembered, others forgotten.

The veteran’s love and commitment for our country and family knows that freedom comes with a demanding and unpredictable price. Many returned home from their service experience indelibly branded, even scared by the impact on their bodies and minds. All too many suffer all the way to their grave. Veterans solemnly realize that if the United States loses its freedom, there is no place to go. Therefore, our prepared military stands to carry the baton of liberty that we may live in peace.

Make no mistake, the United States uniquely stands as the home of the free because of the brave. America’s wars continuously impact veterans, military families, and our country’s very soul. Without our veterans’ service, there would be no peace.

Monuments and memorials are erected throughout our land to remember the valiant endeavors and heroism that our military personnel of their era sacrificed to preserve freedom. All veterans in some manner contributed to our nation’s history.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs 2016 GDX, Indiana had 418,000 veterans residing in Indiana. The VA tax free compensation and pension benefits provided to eligible Indiana veterans and their dependents $1,347,665,000. These benefits relieve some of their burden, enhance their quality of life and contribute to Indiana’s economy.

We are behooved to realize that the price of military service leaves widows, fatherless, and broken-hearted parents behind. Their lives forever changed. They pay a price in their own way. We dislike war, but we must love and actively support our nation’s warriors. This writer knows this pain because he lost a son four years after he returned from Iraq.

Sadly, 20 veterans commit suicide a day. Twice as many unsuccessfully try. The VA stands committed to improving its outreach and services to honor those who served.

Make an effort this Veterans Day to thank a veteran for serving. Offer a helping hand. Volunteer at the VA or American Legion and make a difference. Show you appreciate your freedom because they served you and our county.

The American Legion provides a way for you to support those who served. It’s the right thing to do! Ask us how you can help.

At your service,
Rick Baum

October 2018

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

Summer is drawing to a close and we must look forward to the upcoming months. We have Veterans Day just around the corner, and winter coming up. A lot of preparations for both.

Our post had a wonderful connection with the Zionsville Lions Club with the rain out of the Fall Festival. I would like to thank Deedee for all her extraordinary work in prepping for such a large function on very little notice. Also thank you to all who helps throughout the evening, and turned out to be a very fun night with new friends and new members.

Our Farmers Market will be drawing to a close this next month so please get out and support the local markets from our community.

We have new cash register systems in the post, and all the girls are all currently learning all the details, so please be patient while they master this new piece of equipment. A huge shout out to our finance officer Tom, for all the hard work that he did to acquire this new system.

Post clean up day for the fall will be coming up in October please watch the board for the dates and the details.

Thank you all and keep up the good work.

Thank you.

From Post Service Officer:

SALUTE TO OUR COMRADE, BOB ADAMS

The cycle of life ends with the final chapter, death. All of us will cross that bridge. What defines our life is the dash (what we do between the date of birth and the date of death.

Bob Adams, left this life leaving a legacy. The one word that without a doubt describes Bob is INTEGRITY. His only son, Rob and I visited at the Post days before the funeral. I shared in his grief and sorrow. He shared many pleasant memories of his father, Army veteran, long time Legionnaire, patriot, and grandfather to his daughter, Emily . Now Bob has joined his wife who preceded him in death.

Post 79 remembers Bob as a quiet, behind the scenes supporter that proved to be a long-standing example of integrity.

I remember in 2013, the veteran suicide epidemic reached an all-time high of 22 suicides a day. Post 79 wanted to do something about this dilemma. Art work was designed, and artist Erin Quigley volunteered to skillfully paint it. It was erected and a “cemetery” was constructed with a white border fence and 22 crosses with an American flag placed in front of each one. Money was needed to pay for the materials, and Bob in his quiet way funded it. Post members, guests and the community driving past the Post saw the solemn message and crisis contact information.

Several Post 79 members attended Bob’s funeral memorial/celebration of life. Many 3′ X 5′ American flags were reverently placed around the funeral home in tribute to our comrade in arms, and heart-felt respect for the family he left behind.

Losing a member such as Bob and others like him is difficult, and the Legion proudly provided its funeral ritual to honor Bob who also received a final tribute with military honors, rifle salute and the presentation of the sacred burial flag to Rob.

It is fitting to say, “well done you good and faithful servant” you are missed. We say farewell and thank you for the legacy you left to us who actively carry on the American Legion’s vital mission and noble purpose.

Our country was richer to have a man of his caliber serve her.

At your service,
Rick Baum

August 2018

From the Commander:

July is behind us and with that we look back to see what the month had to offer. It offered celebration for the birth of our country, and it offered times for remembrance and honor of those who have given us the freedoms we enjoy today.

The 73rd anniversary of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis was remembered this month at their Survivors Organization Annual Reunion.

Honored at this reunion were those Sailors and Marines who were lost at sea, the survivors who have passed since and the living survivors of today, five of which were in attendance.

Honoring the survivors makes one think. How many tomorrows would have been lost if someone would not have stood up yesterday?

It is an absolute honor and a treat to meet the survivors, these men who have been to the very edge and back for us, to live their life through their stories, and grieve as they pass. We use the words NEVER FORGET very often.

I would like to thank the post 79 members who were involved in this year’s ceremony, Rick Baum, for his beautiful and heartfelt benediction prayer, Andrew Mehringer, for his diligence of being Forever on guard, and Ed Engledow, for another beautiful rendition of taps.

As a commander, I am very proud of our members who stepped forward to show honor and respect for the USS Indianapolis and her entire crew.

Thank you.

From Post Service Officer:

Service Connected Disabilities (SCD)
For Veterans Who Served in War or Peacetime

Veterans who served in war or peacetime may be eligible for non-taxable compensation payable for life.

The VA perceives that many veterans are not accessing benefits they are eligible to receive. Some are worth hundreds, even thousands of dollars. SCD benefits come in different forms because each veteran’s military experience is individually unique. Various physical or mental ramifications from active duty service unfold over time negatively impacting a veteran’s quality of life. Here is the bottom line; “the body and mind keep the score” as a person served our country. As the years go by, a “time release capsule” unfolds and a veteran’s “employability” decreases.

Don’t believe the myth that you had to sustain a wound or injury in combat in order to receive VA disability compensation. Many service connected disabilities occur because of certain environmental exposures such as noise, sound frequencies, chemicals, radiation, traumatic events, training and other injuries, accidents, assault on one’s person, etc.

Many additional benefits may also be available because of receiving a SCD of 10% or more. Some of these may include property tax or excise tax deduction, reimbursement of certain burial expenses, education waiver of tuition and fees, reduced hunting and fishing license fees, VA health care (full health benefits including eye glasses, hearing aids, blood work, ex-rays, surgeries, mental health counseling, reduced prescription co-pays), reduced state park entry fees, and more.

Consider this, do you have hearing difficulties (ask your wife), or ringing in your ears? You may be a candidate for a SCD rating.

The ALR has had a very nice Charbroil grill they were raffling off the last few months and sorry if you didn’t get your ticket pulled. We had a winner drawn and it was Rick Baum. Congratulations Rick!

We have also been selling meat boards and we want to thank everyone who has participated and were lucky enough to take home some good meat. We are trying to get a little bit more of a variety.

As you know we all are getting ready for the Fall Festival and the Fall Festival Parade in Sept. We will try to have some ALR members present, but depending on the weather we may be walking with the float, or riding. Updates later.

Thanks for continuing to come to the ALR burger and pork chop dinners. If you have not noticed the chops are meatier and the burgers are larger. “MMMMM!!” If you have any suggestions on different side dishes, don’t hesitate to suggest them to any of the ALR burger night servers or members.

July 2018

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

Thank you for another good month at the Legion, the steak and catfish dinner was a crazy night. Thank you to the members and the community.

Speaking of community, I would like to offer our deepest condolences to LeighAnn from Akards Hardware on the tragic passing of her son. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her and her family.

We said goodbye to one of our members, Colonel Gary Thornly, with a memorial service at the War memorial, he will be interned at Arlington National Cemetery later this year.

If you have not seen the War Memorial, then you need to see what our city has to offer.
Indianapolis devotes more acreage than any other U.S. city to honoring our nation’s fallen, and is second only to Washington, DC, in the number of war memorials. Spend a few hours in Indianapolis, honoring our nation’s heroes.

The USS Indianapolis Survivors Reunion is coming up on July 19-22 at the Hyatt Regency downtown. Only 14 of 316 survivors left and at least five of them will be at the reunion. If you want times and details, ask me at the Post.

We also have our Nations birthday just around the corner on July 4th. Please be safe, and patriotic and remember what this day stands for.

Happy and safe summer to all.

Thank you.

AMERICAN LEGION PREAMBLE – KNOWING ITS MEANING

Each of the 10 clauses of the Preamble, though brief, has a world of meaning.

FOR GOD AND COUNTRY, WE ASSOCIATE OURSELVES TOGETHER FOR THE FOLLOWING PURPOSES…

“This is the introduction. It declares that The American Legion recognizes the influence of Almighty God in all worthwhile endeavors-and declares the allegiance of Legionnaires to both God and Nation. First things have been put first. All that follows is in conformity.”

Click here for the American Legion’s interpretation to the preamble.

The following statements come from an edition of the American Legion’s Chaplain’s Handbook “Service to God and Country” – Service to God and Country is basic Americanism. It is not the fostering of religious worship in order to appease any element of our citizenry, or to draw attention from any less desirable social activities. Since it is essentially basic Americanism, it is strictly non-denominational, non-sectarian. It is not intended to act independently of religious groups, but to cooperate with them to the end that the American people might never forget God is the source of all their rights and privileges.

One can look back at Benjamin Franklin’s speech during the Constitutional Convention at Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1787. He said; “I have lived, sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth; that God governs in the affairs of men…we have been assured, sir, in the sacred writing (Holy Bible), that except the Lord builds the house they labor in vain that built.”

It is this same observation that caused the American Legion to re-emphasize the spiritual foundations upon which our nation rests. For this is the day when Americans must be spiritually strong, if America is to live.

It is the aim and objective of the American Legion, “Service to God and Country,” to bring God into the foreground of American life, not merely the religious life, but the social, economic, and political life as well.

God is an essential part of Americanism. Without God, there is no Americanism. Chaplains are purposely implemented to have an important role in the life of the Post.

At your service,
Rick Baum

From the ALR Director:

From the American Legion Riders

Hello everyone! We missed you last month. But, I do have a couple of things to report .
A member of our post, asked the ALR to participate in a memorial service for Colonel Gary Thornly at the Indiana War Memorial. We participated in a very heartfelt ceremony on June 2, 2018. He will have a full Military burial ceremony at Alrlington National Cemetery. We were very proud to participate.

Also we, and other members from SAL and the Women’s Auxiliary and the post went to several different cemetery’s, on Memorial Day, to pay honor to our fallen soldiers. Thank you all for participating.

Don’t forget to come out for Hamburgers and Pork chops to enjoy the food and fellowship. We still have tickets for the gas Grill we are raffling off. The sooner we sell out the sooner the winner can enjoy it.

El-Toro Mexican restaurant is again donating 10% of you food bill, will be donated to Crusin 4 a Cure, Please visit them on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. So, go have some good food and at the same time, you will be helping the children.

Till next time,
God Bless,
American Legion Riders response (motto)

We, your American Legion Riders, ride for God and Country, the American Legion Family and Allied Veterans everywhere. Protect those that protect us. Amen
