Dear Members,

The heat and humidity are here, be mindful of yourselves family, friends and your pets. Everyone needs to stay hydrated and cool.

Our Memorial Day traditions were well attended, and I would like to thank all who participated in the flag placement and Memorial services at the surrounding cemeteries.

The district meeting and Post Everlasting was also well attended and a huge shout to DeeDee and the Ladies Auxiliary for a wonderful meal.

For those of you who have not been to the Post lately, the parking lot has been repaired and looks great!

The month of June brings a new addition to Post activities, starting June 6th, there will be a farmers market in the parking lot every Wednesday from 4PM to 7PM through late October.

Dates to also remember in June are:

June 6 – D-Day observance Day, D-Day is a special anniversary in some countries, including the United States (U.S.), to remember Allied forces’ invasion of Normandy, France, in the Second World War.

June 14 – Flag Day is annually held on June 14 to honor the United States flag.

June 14 – Army Birthday 2018

June 17 – Fathers Day – Father’s Day celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children.

This past Friday, at both Zionsville Middle schools, the American Legion Award was handed out to eight well deserving students.

The award is presented to the students who possess the highest qualities of Courage, Honor, Leadership, Patriotism, Scholarship and Service which are necessary to the preservation and protection of the fundamental institutions of our government and the advancement of society.

The awards were presented to the following students at Zionsville West Middle School by 1st Vice Commander Stuart Konija:

6th Grade: Chase Wagner & Mia Schmidt
8th Grade: Jacob Stevenson & Isabella Stecker

The awards were presented to the following students at Zionsville Middle School by Finance Officer Tom Wothke:

6th Grade: Braden Dubash & Emma Phipps
8th Grade: Owen Readinger & Evelyn Renninger

Congratulations to all the students. Everyone at the Zionsville American Legion is proud of you.

Also, May 25th was National Poppy Day. The schools were able to collect $140 in donations which go to help the Legion’s Veterans and their families. Thanks to everyone who donated.


From the Auxiliary President:

Hard to believe it is June already!

Thank you to all the volunteers who placed flags at local cemeteries. The Memorial Day service at Lincoln Garden was, as always, a beautiful ceremony.

Our new Officers will be installed at this month’s meeting, Monday June 11th at 7:00pm. Ladies, remember to bring a salad and/or dessert for all to enjoy after our meeting.

The AUX will be raffling a Father’s Day basket this month. Be sure to get your ticket(s) early as they sell out quickly. Thank you for your support.

The Zionsville Little League will have the Sponsor Village the morning of Championship Saturday, June 16th. Come visit us and other businesses who are supporting the Little League and community.

Minutes from Joint Meeting:

Meeting opened in due form by Commander Colvin at 7pm.

Bart thanked all for the fundraiser for Cody Wilson. He also thanked all who helped clean
up the post.

This Sat is open house for Judy Morris from 1-5pm.

Steak and catfish was a great success this month.

Gary Thornley funeral is June 2nd at the War Memorial in Indianapolis. He is to be interned at
Arlington. Ed Engledow will play taps again for the Memorial Day graveside services.

There will be a Farmers Market here at the post on Wednesdays from 4-7pm till this Fall.

Beth Clark mentioned that the legion has an article in the Current Magazine.

Rita thanked all for helping and participating in Cody’s ride. Zionsville Little League will now open on June 16th since original day was a rainout.

There will be a contest/art show at ARN Funeral home on May 23rd at 6pm.

Previous minutes read and approved. Committee reports read and accepted.

No new applications.

Dee Dee at the ER due to high blood sugar.

Next Eagle Scout project is on the fundraising phase.
Kurt asked about the smoking ban and was told that it is still being worked on. Need funds to
build smoking room for all who still smoke.

Will put a list at the bar for all who want be on the Legions e-mail.

Mick reported that the Food truck will be at the Methodist Church. Funds going to the Pickett family.

Tony reported that he got an e-mail from the Dept. to have the flag at half-staff on May 15th from sunrise to sunset.

Bart wants to make sure each entity will communicate with each other. Mike Sadj says he will talk to Bart about a program that will let all communicate with each other.

Ed makes a motion to accept nominations of officers. Stu seconded. Motion approved.

From the SAL Commander:

Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I wrote something. We have a generator we are raffling off $5 a chance, only 125 chances. You can buy the tickets at the bar.

We have steak and catfish the second Friday of the month, love for y’all to come out and enjoy a good steak or catfish.

American Legion has pizza night the first Friday of the month.

SL meeting is the first Tuesday of the month. This month we are installing the officers and if you’re wondering, yes I am going to be the SAL Commander again.
