December 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

November is the month of giving thanks, so I will. Thank you to all who have participated, volunteered, supported or just frequented our Post over the last year, your patronage and friendship is valued and much appreciated.

Thank you to Captain Arne Pederson for such a stimulating talk at our annual Veterans Day Ceremony. Thanks to the ALR, the Zionsville Police and Fire Departments, Post 79 Auxiliary, SAL and all who attended, what a great event it turned out to be. Thank you to Home Depot for the invite to do a flag folding ceremony in their store, what a great turn out!

I would like to extend a special thanks to all the ladies who show up to work, week after week for the broasted chicken dinner and the prime rib dinners. So much work involved, couldn’t do it without you, and all the help for the pizza nights, steak and catfish nights, thank you all as well.

As I mentioned last month, we have the new camera system installed and running great. It has already paid off as we can go back and look at past video. I did fail to mention the people who spent a few days planning, configuring and installing the system. The guys from Advanced Electronics, Joe Monfort, Matt and Cory (and tech) who spent the time to run more wire, install the cameras, align them and configure the computers to monitor the events. We cannot thank them enough for the dedication and time spent from their busy schedules to volunteer their time. We at the Zionsville Legion thank them. So, if you see them around the Legion, make sure you tell them thanks.

December is strewn with events,

Dec. 3- Lunch with Santa
Dec. 7- Pearl Harbor Day
Dec. 9- Army/Navy Game, Chili Cook Off
Dec. 13- National Guard Birthday
Dec. 16- National Wreaths Across America Day
Dec. 21- Winter begins
Dec. 25- Christmas

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, safe and MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Thank you.
For God and Country
Bart Colvin
Commander

Mission Statement:

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow service-members and veterans.

From the Auxiliary President:

December is a busy month with lots of things to do and is also a time of Celebration. During this season, take time to remember those who can’t be home for holidays, pray that they come home safely and soon and thank them for their service and sacrifice.

The kids’ Christmas party will be held on Sunday, December 3rd . There will be activities for the kids and the reading of T’was the Night Before Christmas by a special Elf. Lunch at 12:30 with Santa arriving at 2:00. This is open to the public. If possible, please RSVP to post79@att.net

The Auxiliary will be having our annual salad/dessert meeting this month, Monday Dec 11th. We will also have a gift exchange, if you would like to join in, bring a $10 gift for the exchange.

At this writing, there are still some tickets left for the Auxiliary fall basket and we are raffling a Christmas basket. Tickets are $1.00 each. Be sure to get your ticket(s) before they are all gone. Thank you for your support and good luck!

On Sunday, November 26th, American Legion family was invited to take the flag out to the field at the Colts game. Our Post/Unit was represented by Karen Lowe, Beth Applegate, Chrissy Koenig, Janay Martin and myself. What an honor it was to help display that huge flag with Veterans and other Legion members.

I wish everyone a safe and fun holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

God Bless our Troops past, present and future
Rita

Last year firewood was cut, split, and delivered. There are no requests for firewood at this time. I will keep you posted of any changes.

How do I get a veterans ID card?

The Veterans ID Card is issued by the Department of Veteran Affairs. It is only issued to veterans who have obtained medical benefits. The newly issued cards contain a photo and the service they were a member of. For security there is no DOB or SS number. To enroll visit
www.va.gov/healthbenefits/enroll, call 1-877-222-VETS (8387), or visit your local VA medical facility.

Once you are approved for medical benefits a photo will be taken at the medical facility and the card will be mailed. The card can be used to prove veteran status at stores that offer discounts. It is easier to use than a driver’s license and DD214.

For more information visit https://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/vhic/index.asp

At your service,
Rick Baum

December Events Calendar

Happy Holidays to everyone,

I would like to reach out to all of our members that would like to help a family this year. I have met a couple that moved here from Ohio with there four children ages 4, 6, 10, 11 (they are originally from Whitestown/Zionsville area). They were scammed by a man saying they were putting money down on a furnished trailer in Greenwood and then were going to rent to own. When they arrived the trailer was not livable, so they are living in a 1 room hotel room trying to get emergency housing from the state. If you or your family would like to help them out please call me at the post 317-873-3105. They are in need of all house furnishings so if you have any used beds, couches, dressers etc, they would be very greatful. I also have the kids clothes and shoe sizes and their favorite toys.

Again Thank You and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Deedee
