Just because the month is over doesn&#8217;t mean everything is OK for our Veterans, there are homeless, sick and lonely Veterans all over America that still need our help and prayers. For God and Country, we advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism, good citizenship, peace and security<\/strong>.<\/span><\/div>\n<hr>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>From Post Service Officer:<\/strong><\/div>\n<p>Veteran Homelessness is Painful<\/p>\n<p>Having a safe place to live remains at the top of my gratitude list each day.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing a homeless veteran standing on a corner at an intersection causes sadness.\u00a0 Do you ever have that feeling as you drive past a homeless person that you could do something more?\u00a0 There, another weathered person with uncertainty etched in the his\/her face stands holding a sign saying: &#8220;Anything Will Help.&#8221; Do you ask yourself; &#8220;What&#8217;s his\/her story, why are they there, or I wonder what will happen to them?&#8221;\u00a0 It has been said that 40% of the homeless go one or more days without eating.<\/p>\n<p>Many reasons affect homelessness.\u00a0 Some Veterans returned from active duty desperately recovering from their visible and invisible wounds suffered while deployed and no family to greet them nor home to lay their head; others are harshly displaced after a heart wrenching divorce; there are those who lost their job of twenty plus years and have no way to support themselves or their dependent family; some veterans are released from prison with no permanent place to go.<\/p>\n<p>Homelessness impacts a person like a fierce storm.\u00a0 Imagine the feelings of despair, fear, humiliation, hopelessness, cries for health and dental care, physical pain from being exposed to the ruthless abuse of thugs or the severity of inclement weather!\u00a0 The struggle to survive has ambushed the American dream.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s not forget their children too.<\/p>\n<p>CHOOSE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT HOMELESSNESS &#8211; Write it on the calendar<\/p>\n<ul style=\"margin: 50px;\">\n<li>Learn more about homelessness (search websites, visit shelters)<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer to help at shelters<\/li>\n<li>Collect and Donate items<\/li>\n<li>Raise and donate funds<\/li>\n<li>Request a Guest Speaker to present their mission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"margin: 50px;\">\n<li><a style=\"color: #0000ee; Legion Christmas Party and Pitch-in<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>27th &#8211; ALR Meeting 7pm<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong>31st &#8211; New Year&#8217;s Eve Snack Pitch-in 6pm<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<hr>\n<div><strong>Final Note<\/strong><\/div>\n<div align=\"left\">\n<div align=\"center\"><b>A Soldier&#8217;s T&#8217;was the Night Before Christmas<\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">T&#8217;was the night before Christmas, he lived all alone,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">in a one bedroom house made of\u00a0 plaster and stone.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I had come down the chimney with presents to give,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">and to see just who in this home did live.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I looked all about, a strange sight I did see,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">no tinsel, no presents, not even a tree.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">No stocking by the mantle, just boots filled with sand,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">and on the wall pictures of far distant lands.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">With medals and badges, awards of all kinds,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">a sobering thought came to my mind.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">For this house is different, so dark and so dreary,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">the home of a soldier, now I could see clearly.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">The soldier lay sleeping, silent, alone,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">curled up on the floor in this one bedroom home.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">The face was so gentle, the room in such disorder,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">not how I pictured a United States soldier.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">Was this the hero of whom I&#8217;d just read?<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">Curled up on a poncho, the floor for a bed?<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I realized the families that I saw that night,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">owed their lives to these soldiers who were willing to fight.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">Soon round the world, the children would play,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">and grownups would celebrate a bright Christmas day.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">They all enjoyed freedom each month of the year,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">because of the soldiers, like the one lying here.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I couldn&#8217;t help wonder how many lay alone,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">on a cold Christmas eve in a land far from home.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">The very thought brought a tear to my eye,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I dropped to my knees and started to cry.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">The soldier awakened and I heard a rough voice,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">&#8220;Santa don&#8217;t cry, this life is my choice.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I fight for freedom, I don&#8217;t ask for more,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">my life is my God, my country, my corps.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">The soldier rolled over and soon drifted to sleep,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I couldn&#8217;t control it, I continued to weep.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I kept watch for hours, so silent and still,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">and we both shivered from the cold evening&#8217;s chill.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\"><\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">I didn&#8217;t want to leave on that cold, dark night,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">this guardian of honor so willing to fight.<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">Then the soldier rolled over, with a voice soft and pure,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">whispered, &#8220;Carry on Santa, it&#8217;s Christmas day, all is secure.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">One look at my watch, and I knew he was right,<\/div>\n<div align=\"center\">&#8220;Merry Christmas my friend and to all a good night.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div align=\"left\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From the Commander: Dear Members, November was a month of Honor and Remembrance for all of America&#8217;s Veterans.
