From the Commanders:

AL_Poppy

Did you know that National Poppy Day® is May 25, 2018? Please join us and wear a poppy in honor of our American veterans.

The poppy flower flourished in France and Belgium after World War I. Scientists attributed the growth of the poppies to the enriched soil from lime in rubble left by the war. From the dirt and mud grew a beautiful, red poppy – a symbol of resilience shown by our nation’s service members.

For this special day, we encourage you – and your friends and family – to wear a poppy to show veterans that you honor the fallen and support the living. Please do not delay in ordering your poppies!

Also, On May 25th, Tom Wothke, Finance Officer, will be presenting the Legion Awards at the Zionsville Middle School at 9am (5th & 6th graders) and 10:30am (7th & 8th graders). Stuart Konija, 1st Vice Commander, will be presenting the Legion awards at the Zionsville West Middle School. We will be wearing our Poppies in honor of our Veterans. So, if you can join us for the awards day, we can show our support for the students and veterans. Contact Tom for the details (317-714-0718)

Don’t forget this weekend, May 5th is our Spring Clean-up Day at the Legion. Come by and lend a hand to get our Post looking good for the summer. Stop by anytime between 9am-3pm to help out.

Want to thank everyone who participated in the fund raising for Cody Wilson. It was a great success. We can always depend on our members to step up when needed.

As membership is important, let us not forget our deceased members as Memorial Day approaches. Please feel free to join in as our Post 79 does there yearly service at all local cemeteries.

Thank you.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

May 2018 – Post Service Officer News

ARMED FORCES DAY DESERVES TRIBUTE

The month of May brings opportunities for citizens to display patriotism throughout our community, state and nation. Each year, Armed Forces Day is recognized on the third Saturday.

This year’s Armed Forces Day is May 19th. This is a day when Americans give tribute to all the men and women in uniform who serve the United States as your Guardians of Freedom, home and overseas. This salute encompasses all branches of military service. May is deemed Military Appreciation Month.

Historically, President Truman signed a proclamation stating, “Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstration by America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, toward the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the first parade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea and air defense.” That year’s theme was “teamed for defense.”

President Truman’s proclamation was signed following WWII’s battles, and at the threshold of the Korean War. Americans celebrated the first Armed Forces Day with parades, open houses, receptions, and air shows.

Do you know someone serving in the armed forces to protect your peace and liberty? Show your appreciation by sending them a communication conveying that you honor their devotion and sacrifice. You can also send care packages to their unit while deployed. Invite them for a meal when they are home on leave. Such encouragement builds morale and encourages our oath takers especially during tough times when it’s needed most.

Remember to fly your flag especially on Armed Forces Day. Your Zionsville American Legion sells replacement flags and provides a means for you to bring your unserviceable flags to the Post for proper disposal according to the United States Flag Code.

At your service,
Rick Baum

April 2018

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

March is gone and we are looking at a very busy spring and summer.

During March we have shown solidarity, strength and compassion.

The outpouring of support from the community and from our legion family during the Deputy Jacob Pickett tragedy shows our true heart.

A very special thank you to DeeDee and her crew for taking care of all the food.

Spring cleanup day is quickly approaching and would like to see a huge turnout, we have numerous things to do.

We will be closed on Easter Sunday.

Don’t forget the happenings in April,

Of course, April Fool’s Day, Tax Day (seems to go together)

And on the Third Monday in April

Some people know little or nothing about Patriot’s Day. To New Englanders, it is a big, big day. In the states in New England, it’s a holiday with a day off of work. Banks, schools, post offices, and businesses have the day off.

Patriot’s Day commemorates the Battle of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. This battle began the American Revolutionary War. It also honors the “Midnight Ride of Paul Revere”, that evening when Paul Revere rode through town warning the colonists that “The Red Coats are coming!”

We have several new members so if you see a new face, make them feel welcome.
Have a good month and, See you at the Post

Thank you.

From Vice Commander:

Hope everyone is looking forward to warmer weather and are keeping our fingers crossed for NO MORE SNOW!! I am sure we are passed that by now.

If you are a member of the Legion, SAL or Auxiliary, you should have received a letter or email talking about the survey we are conducting with our members. This is a short 11 question survey to let us know how you see Post 79. This is very important that you take a few minutes to complete it as we will be using this information as we move forward with the future of our Post.

Thank you to all who have taken the time to do this. We greatly appreciate your efforts.

Thank you and God bless The USA.
Stuart Konija
1st Vice Commander

From the Auxiliary President:

April showers bring May flowers and hoping for no more snow!
Happy Spring all!

By now you should have received either an email or letter if you are a Legion, SAL or Auxiliary member, regarding a survey we are conducting. It is a short survey and your input is extremely important. Please take the time to respond. Thank you.

Our Post will be set up at the Sponsor Village at Lions Park for Zionsville Little League on opening day Saturday, April 14th. Opening Ceremonies are from 9:30 – 10:30 with games starting at 11:00. The Sponsor Village is set up on either side of the walk path between fields 1 and 5. Plan to come see us and enjoy some little league baseball. We will have poppies for donation, copies of the monthly lunch menu/events schedule, basket raffle and some give away items. Drawing for basket and giveaway winners will be held at the Post at 4:00 that day. Hope to see you there!

Our meeting last month was a busy one. Those in attendance voted on, and passed, to raise our annual dues to $30.00. Junior members’ dues will remain the same at $10.00. Also, we will have a kid themed basket for the Sponsor Village, please have donations for this basket at the Post no later than Wednesday, April 11th. We will also have a Mother’s Day themed basket in May. Please bring your donated items to our meeting April, 9th.

Reports are due on April 15th. We will be filling out our reports on Saturday, April 7th at 10:00 a.m. If you have any volunteer hours that need to be reported, you will need to bring them to the Post or email me so we can send in all our volunteer hours. These reports are very important because the information eventually ends up on the Congress floor and helps to determine Veteran needs/benefits.

Our fall/winter bowling league has ended. Thank you to all who participated and remember the bowling machine is available all summer as well and part of the proceeds from the machine stay at our Post. Hope everyone had fun and look forward to the next league in the fall.

Have a wonderful April and see you at the Post!

God Bless our Troops past, present and future

From Post Service Officer:

You May be Eligible for VA Benefits

The VA estimates that nearly 1/3 of our nation’s veterans are potentially eligible for federal veterans’ benefits. Such benefits are provided on behalf of a grateful nation, honoring those who served. Unfortunately, many of these veterans do not know what benefits they are eligible to receive, or how to apply for them.

A veteran does not necessarily have to serve in combat, or during a time of war to receive benefits.

As a Post Service Officer, I assist any eligible veteran and their dependents, even if they are not a member of the American Legion. Our Indiana American Legion (accredited) Veterans’ Service Office files (at no cost) an average of 500 claims a month for Hoosier veterans and their dependents. According to the 2016 GDX, 463,000 veterans reside in Indiana. The American Legion continues to serve as a strong and effective advocate, not only in filing claims, but also lobbying for legislation to improve the quality of life of our veterans and their families. Your dues support these efforts!

Approximately 3,790 veterans reside in Boone County. That means Post 79 can provide claims services to our local veterans. This service is free, and a good segue for inviting these Guardians of Freedom to become a member of our great veterans service organization. More than $18,000,000 in compensation and pension benefits are paid to Boone County veterans and their families.

The VA has two roles: serve the veteran and guard the taxpayer’s money. Nothing is ever final in the VA’s system because all cases can be reopened, and new material can be reviewed. The veteran has the right to appeal a decision if the VA is perceived to be in error. The American Legion helps with such appeals.

Consider pursuing VA benefits. Also, do you know a veteran in the area who wishes to receive VA benefits? Have them contact me through the Post. I am here to help.

Lastly, my heartfelt thanks go to those of you who volunteer at the Roudedbush VA Medical Center.

At your service,
Rick Baum

Bob would want us all to look up.
May he rest in Eternal Peace.

Don’t forget the American Legion is celebrating its centennial!

History of The American Legion

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veteran’s organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.

Over the years, the Legion has influenced considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth.

Focusing on Veterans benefits, the Post will be sponsoring a seminar on March 24, based strictly on benefits.

Please see the following flyer and letter and plan to attend.

From Post Service Officer:

Preamble to the American Legion’s Constitution

I remember as a young Cub Scout visiting the World War Memorial in Indianapolis. I was fascinated by all the memorabilia and historic tribute given to those who fought in our country’s wars. I never realized that decades later I would be part of the American Legion which was birthed in 1919 because of World War I.

The Great War’s horrific effects indelibly branded the hearts and souls of that generation. They have died and are all gone. WWI so moved them that when those who served and returned from war joined together to establish the American Legion’s principles and cultural influence in our country. They dedicated their individual and collective support to our veterans, their families, military personnel, and communities.

The Preamble demonstrates the Legionnaire spirit, and loyalty to Americanism and its cherished freedoms which remains the heartbeat of the American Legion’s efforts for generations past and future.

Today, Legionnaire’s throughout our land recite each month in unison the Preamble to the Legion’s Constitution. Why? To remember our history, those oath takers who went before us, who we are, our values, and why we as a Legion do the things we do. The next time you read the preamble, and its carefully worded phrases, give thought to its history, and its meaning for our generation.

We solemnly understand the saying: “Freedom in not free.” The generations of the men and women who took the oath of enlistment and served our beloved country preserved our liberty. Our Legion Post should reflect and remain committed to those great Americanism principles. They need to be taught, lived and passed on as a legacy.

Thank you, Zionsville Post 79 for continuing to serve the Legion. It is your service that provides a light house effect for Americanism in our community. Our community will not forget the service and sacrifice of our Guardians of Freedom because you make a difference.

February 2018

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

I hope everyone is staying warm and dry, crazy Indiana weather.

SAL pizza night was a huge success in January and unfortunately steak and catfish had to be cancelled, because of, none other, than bad weather.

The broasted chicken dinner was well attended, thank you all that volunteered, and DeeDee who works tirelessly day after day.

The prime rib dinners are being rescheduled from every Sunday to every OTHER Sunday so stay tuned to the white announcement board by the front door.

We will have a guest speaker coming to the Post in mid March to talk about Veteran benefits and programs, so stay tuned for final details on date and time and please plan to attend.

This month in history is interesting,

February 2, 1848 – The war between the U.S. and Mexico ended with the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe HidalgoTreaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In exchange for $15 million, the U.S. acquired the areas encompassing parts or all of present day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas. The treaty was ratified on March 10, 1848.

February 3, 1943 – An extraordinary act of heroism occurred in the icy waters off Greenland after the U.S. Army transport ship Dorchester was hit by a German torpedo and began to sink rapidly. When it became apparent there were not enough life jackets, four U.S. Army chaplains on board removed theirs, handed them to frightened young soldiers, and chose to go down with the ship while praying.

February 10, 1942 – The first Medal of Honor during World War II was awarded to 2nd Lt. Alexander Nininger (posthumously) for heroism during the Battle of Bataan.

February 23, 1942 – During World War II, the first attack on the U.S. mainland occurred as a Japanese submarine shelled an oil refinery near Santa Barbara, California, causing minor damage

Birthday – American frontiersman “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846-1917) was born in Scott County, Indiana. He claimed to have killed over 4,000 buffalo within 17 months. He became world famous through his Wild West show which traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe for 30 years.

A very interesting month in history, check it out in it’s entirety at www.thehistoryplace.com

Thank you all for your continuing patriotism and loyalty to Post 79.

Thank you.

From Post Service Officer:

If you served in the Southwest Asia theater of military operations (see list of countries included) from August 2, 1990 to the present, you should contact the VA to sign-up for the Gulf War Registry. This also includes Veterans who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2010) and Operation New Dawn (2010-2011).

  • Iraq
  • Kuwait
  • Saudi Arabia
  • The neutral zone between Iraq and Saudi Arabia
  • Bahrain
  • Qatar
  • The United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.)
  • Oman
  • Gulf of Aden
  • Gulf of Oman
  • Waters of the Persian Gulf, the Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea
  • The airspace above these locations

VA offers eligible Veterans a free Gulf War Registry health exam to find possible long-term health problems related to Gulf War service. Thousands of Gulf War era veterans suffer from medically unexplained illnesses.

VA’s Gulf War Registry Health Exam alerts Veterans to possible long-term health problems that may be related to environmental exposures during their military service. The registry data helps VA understand and respond to these health problems more effectively.

Contact your local VA Environmental Health Coordinator about getting a Gulf War Registry health exam. You do not have to be enrolled in the VA to register for the health exam.

Do you want to file a VA benefit claim? You can contact me or the County Veterans Service Officer to learn how you may be eligible for benefits.

We gave several goodie bags to both the women, and men Veteran’s there. They were all very appreciative in receiving the bags. Thank you, Will Reymore, for organizing everything for the trip.

Plans are for a day ride to Cincinnati, and possibly, an overnight ride somewhere close by.

  5. VA offers health care benefits for Veterans who may have been exposed to Agent Orange
and other herbicides during military service.
  6. Participating in an Agent Orange Registry health exam helps you, other Veterans and VA.
  7. VA recognizes and offers support for the children of Veterans affected by Agent Orange who have birth defects.
  8. Vietnam Veterans are not the only Veterans who may have been exposed to Agent Orange.
  9. VA continues to conduct research on the long-term health effects of Agent Orange in order to better care for all Veterans.
  10. VA contracts with an independent, non-governmental organization to review the scientific and medical information on the health effects of Agent Orange.

Dear Members,

November is the month of giving thanks, so I will. Thank you to all who have participated, volunteered, supported or just frequented our Post over the last year, your patronage and friendship is valued and much appreciated.

As I mentioned last month, we have the new camera system installed and running great. It has already paid off as we can go back and look at past video. I did fail to mention the people who spent a few days planning, configuring and installing the system. The guys from Advanced Electronics, Joe Monfort, Matt and Cory (and tech) who spent the time to run more wire, install the cameras, align them and configure the computers to monitor the events. We cannot thank them enough for the dedication and time spent from their busy schedules to volunteer their time. We at the Zionsville Legion thank them. So, if you see them around the Legion, make sure you tell them thanks.

Last year firewood was cut, split, and delivered. There are no requests for firewood at this time. I will keep you posted of any changes.

How do I get a veterans ID card?

The Veterans ID Card is issued by the Department of Veteran Affairs. It is only issued to veterans who have obtained medical benefits. The newly issued cards contain a photo and the service they were a member of. For security there is no DOB or SS number. To enroll visit
www.va.gov/healthbenefits/enroll, call 1-877-222-VETS (8387), or visit your local VA medical facility.

Once you are approved for medical benefits a photo will be taken at the medical facility and the card will be mailed. The card can be used to prove veteran status at stores that offer discounts. It is easier to use than a driver’s license and DD214.

For more information visit https://www.va.gov/healthbenefits/vhic/index.asp

December Events Calendar

Happy Holidays to everyone,

I would like to reach out to all of our members that would like to help a family this year. I have met a couple that moved here from Ohio with there four children ages 4, 6, 10, 11 (they are originally from Whitestown/Zionsville area). They were scammed by a man saying they were putting money down on a furnished trailer in Greenwood and then were going to rent to own. When they arrived the trailer was not livable, so they are living in a 1 room hotel room trying to get emergency housing from the state. If you or your family would like to help them out please call me at the post 317-873-3105. They are in need of all house furnishings so if you have any used beds, couches, dressers etc, they would be very greatful. I also have the kids clothes and shoe sizes and their favorite toys.

Again Thank You and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

Another month behind us and now the holidays are staring us in the face. Where has time gone?

As winter is approaching, we need to remember those less fortunate and try to help them stay warm this winter. If you have clothes you can donate to our veterans in need, bring them by the Legion. We have a drop off spot inside the Post. Thank you in advance.

November 11th is Veteran’s Day, recognition for all of our great service men and women from the past and the present. Do not forget our veterans day ceremony at the post all the details are on the board, we have a guest speaker and the outstanding ham and bean dinner to follow.

Thanks to all who came by to help us on our Fall Clean Up day. There was a lot accomplished by the ones who showed up. The outside was spruced up. Got rid of some unsightly bushes and this spring will be replaced with new ones. All the tables and chairs were cleaned, hand dryers installed in all the bathrooms, and a few other odds and ends. It is looking great again.

We also have the new camera system installed to help ensure our members and guest stay safe both inside and out. So, while you are in there enjoying the happenings, keep an eye on the monitors to make sure everyone makes it to there cars safely, especially since winter is upon us and the conditions can get worse. “If you see something, say something.”

If you are a veteran in need of a ride to or from the VA center, there is a service called Volunteer Transportation Network of Boone County. Their number is 317-746-0453. They will provide FREE transport to the VA center and bring you back home. If you ever find yourself stuck at the VA with no ride home, contact Del French at 317-988-2472 at the VA Hospital and he will arrange a ride home for you. Make sure you pass this along to your fellow veterans so they know too.

Please come and join us this next month for one of our wonderful meals, pizza night – first Friday of the month, steak and catfish – the second Friday of the month and as always, the prime rib dinner on Sunday afternoons.

Hope to see you there come help support the post.

Thank you.
For God and Country

From the Auxiliary President:

In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day to commemorate the end of World War I. The end of the war happened at the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, so that’s why November 11 was chosen. Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954. Veterans Day, a legal holiday in the U.S., honors all who have served in the nation’s armed forces, whether they are living or dead.

Congratulations to Kim Rossister who won the Auxiliary ‘Get Away’ raffle. Look for the next Auxiliary raffle soon, you could be the next winner!  Thank you for your support.

The Auxiliary is continuing to collect dimes for the Auxiliary Emergency Fund which was created to provide temporary assistance to eligible members during a time of financial crisis.  A plastic water bottle holds $100 in dimes.  Thank you for your support in this project.  Members helping Members.

Mark you calendar for Dec 3rd, the annual Kids’ Christmas party.  Bring the kids for some Christmas fun, music and Santa. Open to everyone.  Lunch at noon with Santa coming at 2:00 p.m.

Our next meeting will be on Monday, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back on Sunday, November 5th so you will be there on time!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Veteran’s Day:

Today is the day we honor, the noble and the brave, the men and woman who dedicated their lives, and the sacrifices that they have made. When America had an urgent need, they were the first to raise their hand, without thinking twice about it, they were proud to take a stand. Some came back from war with battle scars, others in flagged draped coffins, even though their flesh may have left, their spirits will never be forgotten. They unselfishly and knowingly, put their lives on the line, so when you see a veteran, thank them, cause without them, freedom would have died.

God Bless our Troops past, present and future
Rita

My HealtheVet has a New Look – Check it Out!

VA is committed to serving Veterans and providing them with the best possible health care. This is why VA redesigned My HealtheVet and adopted U.S. Web Design Standards to improve Veterans’ online experience. My HealtheVet, VA’s online personal health record, is a free tool to help Veterans take charge of their health care. The site will feature new colors and a leaner, cleaner look. Veterans will notice that all their favorite My HealtheVet features such as Pharmacy, Appointments, Secure Messaging, and Health Records are still accessible on the home page.

What Enhancements Can Veterans Expect?
*New Drop-down Boxes: There are now fewer tabs, making it easier for Veterans to quickly navigate to where they want to go. We replaced 13 red and white tabs with six blue drop-down topics. Each of the following topics has drop-down navigation sub topics to help Veterans locate their targeted feature:
* Personal Information
* Pharmacy
* Research Health
* Get Care
* Track Health
* MHV Community
* Search, About, Contact: These resources are now on the upper right-hand corner of every page, making them more visible.
* Quick Links: The popular “Quick Links” section, with links to VA resources, is located on the bottom of every page.
* Login and Register: The Login and Register buttons are clearly visible. Registration requires fewer steps.
* Other Changes: Overall, My HealtheVet is adopting the VA-wide web design. Veterans will notice some other minor changes, such as the eye-catching Login and Register buttons.

What Will Be the Same?
* Health Information: Veterans’ VA health information and self-entered data will not be affected by this change.
* Features and Functionality: All features and functionality are the same. Veterans will still be able to accomplish their tasks as before (refilling prescriptions, sending Secure Messages, accessing VA medical records etc.).User ID and Password: My HealtheVet User IDs and passwords are not affected.

From the American Legion Riders:

Hello everyone!

Happy Halloween.

I am relaying information about the recent the ALR” Cruzin 4 a Cure” we sponsored in September. Thanks goes out to Chrissy Koenig for all of her hard work on this event, and also all who participated and helped.

2017 Josiah’s Ride: Cruzin’ 4 a Cure benefit was Saturday, September 30th at the Zionsville American Legion.   This year we sponsored three-year-old Isaiah Elders as he battles Leukemia.  Together we raised just under $15,000 which will go to the families of children fighting these terrible diseases, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, to be used to distribute food & gas gift cards to families at St. Vincent Children’s Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health North, to help offset costs during lengthy clinical stays.  This being our 11th year for our benefit, we have raised almost $130,000 for our local community.  Thanks for all of your support!!!

Great Job!!

Halloween has passed and we did have a chilly, fun Trunk or Treat for the children to come and get some free, safe candy. Thanks to all who participated.

Don’t forget to come and support your American Legion Riders on Tuesday November 21. 5:30 to 7:00, for Burgers and Pork Chops!

American Legion Riders response (motto)

We, your American Legion Riders, ride for God and Country, the American Legion Family and Allied Veterans everywhere. Protect those that protect us. Amen

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

Another month is past us, we are officially into fall, with winter staring us in the face.

Let’s help each other and be proactive to make the preparations needed for winter, snow shovels, salt, car maintenance and all the fun stuff associated with colder temperatures.

The Zionsville Fall Festival was a hugely good time, the Post was well represented, and the float was voted CHAIRMAN’S CHOICE. We presented the Colors for the official beginning of the festival which is always a great honor.

A huge THANK YOU to all members who helped and or participated in the parade and festival.

“JOSIAH’S RIDE” on Sep. 30, Flyers are at the Post with all the details. Josiah’s Ride is a fundraising event for the battle against childhood leukemia/lymphoma and we have two sponsor children this year from our community. If anyone has anything to donate for the auctions please contact Chrissy Koenig, Dianna Colvin or Vickie Gieselman. Come and help these kids and their families with their courageous battle.

The shelter house is undergoing a major face-lift, thank you to the Boy Scouts and the parents, well done.

Other days to remember in October are:

Day of the Deployed – October 26
National Day of the Deployed honors all of the brave men and woman who have been deployed and are sacrificing, or have sacrificed their lives to fight for our country and acknowledges their families that they are separated from.

Navy Day – October 13th or October 27th
Many nations around the world celebrate their navies, with a special day dedicated to them. Each country selects a date relevant to their navy, often the birth date of the navy.
In the United States, Navy Day is commonly celebrated on October 27th. This date was selected as it was the birth date of President Theodore Roosevelt, an avid supporter of the U.S. Navy. In the 1970’s, research determined that the birthday of the U.S. Continental Navy was October 13, 1775. At the time, efforts were made to move Navy Day to this date. However, Navy Day in the United States, is still largely recognized as October 27th.
On Navy Day, give some well deserved attention to your proud U.S. Navy, and to the sailors who serve our country…….Salute!

FRANKENSTEIN FRIDAY! – Date When Celebrated : last Friday in October
Frankenstein Friday celebrates the birth of Frankenstein and its creator. Frankenstein is one of the best known horror characters, dating back to the 1800’s. We can’t imagine the Halloween season without the presence of Frankenstein, lurking somewhere in the darkness.

Halloween – October 31
Please be safe.

November 11th is Veterans Day
Our Post celebration will be on Saturday, November 11th. Please keep this date open.

It takes all of us to make this work, let us always move forward in a positive manner.

Thank you.

September 2017

From the Commander:

Dear Members,

The warm weather is hanging on and summer is drawing to a close. That means we have the Fall Festival coming up, Patriots Day, and Veterans Day just around the corner.

Post 79 will have a float in the Festival Parade and a booth in Lions Park. Signup sheet is hanging on the message board.

Thank you to all that have attended or prime rib dinners, if you haven’t, your missing out.

On a somber note, we lost ten sailors this last week. Please keep them and their families in your prayers.

Those who live today remember those who do not. Those who know freedom remember today, those who gave up life for freedom.

Today, in honor of the dead, we conduct ceremonies. We lay wreaths. We speak words of tribute. And in our memories, in our hearts, we hold them close to us still. Yet we also know, even as their families knew when they last looked upon them, that they can never be fully ours again, that they belong now to God and to that for which they so selflessly made a final and eternal act of devotion.

We could not forget them. Even if they were not our own, we could not forget them. For all time, they are what we can only aspire to be: giving, unselfish, the epitome of human love — to lay down one’s life so that others might live.

We think on their lives. We think on their final moments. In our mind’s eye, we see young Americans in a European forest or on an Asian island or at sea or in aerial combat.

And as life expired, we know that those who could had last thoughts of us and of their love for us. As they thought of us then, so, too, we think of them now, with love, with devotion, and with faith: the certainty that what they died for was worthy of their sacrifice — faith, too, in God and in the Nation that has pledged itself to His work and to the dream of human freedom, and a nation, too, that today and always pledges itself to their eternal memory.

May they all rest in eternal peace.

Thank you.
For God and Country

September, summer ending and fall beginning. It is also a time of remembrance. On September 11th, 2001 our nation lost thousands of lives during a terrorist attack. On Remembrance Day and everyday, when you see any Police, Firefighter or Veteran, thank them for their service. They risk their lives everyday for us.

On another recent trip to the VA Hospital to take items donated to the Domicilary, Beth Applegate was told they have a need for warm clothing before the weather turns cold. Large, XL, 2XL and 3XL. Nothing used please and no socks, they have plenty. The donation box is located in the bar.

Fall conference is September 29th, 30th and Oct 1st . The workshops are very informative and if you plan to attend, please see me for registration information.

Our fall bowling league will be starting soon. Teams will be 2 person teams again. A sign up sheet is posted at the bar. Get a partner and come join us. The cost is $2.50 in the machine and $5.00 for your scoring sheet, each bowler. A part of the funds in the machine benefit the Legion. You can bowl anytime during the week, no set day/night or time. A schedule will be posted and I’ll post what week we are on either on the machine or the board. We would love to see more participation this year. Hope to see you at the bowling machine!

From the Director
Of the American Legion Riders:

From the American Legion Riders

I want to thank Danny Price, and Rhonda Cowen for inviting Donna Davis and myself to go to Ft. Dodge Kansas and participate in the 2017 American Legion Riders Legacy Run. It started At Fort Dodge Kansas on Aug. 12, 2017 and ended Aug. 17, 2017 in Reno Nevada.

The Legacy Run was a fund raiser for post 911 Veterans children to attend college. Last year it was adopted to also include Veterans with 50% or more disabilities. After over 270 motorcyclists, who on the highway was over four and a half miles long, rode over 1,400 miles in six days, we were glad to hear we had raised over 1.2 million dollars for these children’s college educations.

This trip was truly a humbling experience. In every little town there were people cheering, saluting, and American Flags everywhere. It was so amazing to see all the beautiful things God has created and what our soldiers have fought and given their lives for, so we can have the freedom to do so.

Don’t forget to tell people and come out on Tuesday Sept. 19 for good hamburgers, pork chops, or hot dog dinners!

Thanks go out to all our helpers in the kitchen and grill master for filling in for us while we were gone.

We are planning a few other events so, please stay tuned!

Thank You and GOD bless our Armed Forces and America!
